Though some believe the Bible doesn't conclusively make a stand on abortion, it is clear from many other contemporary documents that the church that Christ established condemned the act.For example,The Epistle of Barnabas reads: "Thou shalt not murder a child by abortion, nor again shalt thou kill it when it is born." Athenagoras (A.D. 150-190) said: "Those women who use drugs to bring on abortion commit murder, and will have to give an account to God for the abortion."
Some religious and moral leaders today suggest leniency on abortion. The Lord has repeated His no-compromise stance in modern times by saying we shouldn't do anything that even resembles murder. If we believe this, the argument over when life begins is immaterial--even if the fetus isn't "alive" and therefore guaranteed constitutional rights, an abortion certainly resembles murder, and should be condemned.

Some people believe that there are multiple realities or truths. They therefore believe that many sets of beliefs have the power to bring us back to our Heavenly Father's presence and gain eternal happiness. They believe, for instance, that repentance can be required in one church and not another, but both churches can be right. They believe that two churches can claim divine authority, and both be right. We are changeable. We have the ability to change our personality, our habits, our thoughts. Though we are most definitely influenced by everything we interact with, our ultimate choices are ours alone to make. What we consistently choose to do shapes us to become something. Even the Savior did not become who He was in an instant. His constant and consistent choices shaped His character over time. Of all of the things the Lord could have commanded us to do in remembrance of Him, He chose the institution of the sacrament. We are specifically asked to remember His"body," and His "blood, which was shed for [us], that [we] may always have His Spirit to be with [us]." Too much power given to one person is potentially very bad. Even when the person in power is morally in good standing, too much power usually transfers to a future successor. Spreading out the power helps keep would-be tyrannists in check. Baptism includes a promise to follow God's commandments for one's entire life. Many of the same people who preach integrity in worldly arenas have seriously neglected this promise they made earlier in life. A popular excuse is that the person was naive back when the promise was made--he or she didn't fully understand what it entailed. Thus, that person should not be held accountable for such promises. |
