How can I know the correct interpretation? Peter said that "no prophecy of scripture [came from] any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man, but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." Prophecies that are in the scriptures did not come from a scholarly interpretation of prior scriptures. They came from God himself, and were given to holy men. Peter experienced this first-hand, as testified by the Savior himself when Peter proclaimed "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God." To this Jesus responded, "Blessed art thou, [Peter]: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven."
Rather than relying on his own wisdom, Peter relied on God Himself for a witness of the truth, treating the scriptures as an additional rather than the primary source.
While everyone is promised this same revelation from heaven if they seek it, only certain holy men are given authority to receive revelation for all of God's children here on earth. It was this claim of authority that took the scholarly chief priests, scribes, and elders by surprise when Jesus spoke as though He had it.
Scholarly credentials provide little confidence that a particular interpretation of scripture is correct, because I'd be relying on the wisdom of a man or group of men. If this is all that I had, my beliefs would change as often as I found someone(s) I perceived to be more scholarly or more intelligent. But if I know that a specific interpretation came through God's appointed mouthpiece on earth just like Peter, I can know I am relying on God's wisdom rather than man's.
