Those called of God to preach are commanded to teach nothing but repentance. Yet we are taught not only to repent of our sins, but also to read the scriptures, to listen to modern day prophets, to serve our neighbors, to pray unceasingly, and so forth. If we are to teach repentance only, why are all the rest of the gospel topics regularly preached?
Those who do not accept scripture from God are rejecting His truths. Those who are not listening to modern day prophets are making a mistake. If we aren't serving our neighbors, how can we expect to obtain salvation? Without unceasing prayer, our hopes for eternal life are dim. In short, if we aren't living every gospel truth, we are in need of repentance. Teaching us to live according to these truths is preaching repentance indeed.

When speaking of the last days, Christ said "Because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that remaineth steadfast and is not overcome, the same shall be saved." When we have a knowledge of good and evil for a given choice, we have to submit ourselves to either good or evil. When faced with such a choice, there is no third option. Our actions under those circumstances then show where our faith is strongest. Scientific evidence is only one method of discovering truth. In many cases it is a very weak method, and in many cases science simply has no way to even attempt truth discovery. We should not write off science as irrelevant, because it certainly has value. Neither should we limit ourselves to blindly accepting only what science offers. We have access to One who already knows all truth. Satan obviously had a very compelling argument in the War in Heaven. It was compelling enough that one-third of all Heavenly Father's children took his side. What was it about Satan's plan that made it so compelling? One reason was it guaranteed a type of salvation to every person. Each person would be compelled to choose the right, and would thereby gain eternal life. The American Constitution is based on a set of principles that should be guaranteed to all. So important was the perception of the need for God-given values, that some who drafted the Constitution refused to sign it until the Bill of Rights was added. Vigilance is watchfulness, alertness, or attentiveness. Vigilance in working toward eternal life is most difficult during the easy times. When we have blessed for so long, then it is easiest to be less diligent. |
