Like a perfect loving parent, Heavenly Father loves us, His children. His focus, his work, is to help us progress and reach ever higher levels of happiness and joy. This is what He glories in.
When the scriptures speak of tempting God, it seems to come in the context of someone(s) asking for a sign. "Show us a sign, then we will believe in God," they say. Heavenly Father knows that unless they believe in Him, their progression is stunted. Thus, their offer is an enticement, which is the common thread among all temptation of every sort.
God's children try to tempt Him all the time. Promising a level of discipleship in return for a sign or for deliverance from a hardship is a common prayer. But signs and deliverance tend to come after discipleship, not before.
